What is Your Motivation?
Last night, I sat down to watch the Olympics with my family. I love the Summer Olympics, and follow many of the events regularly. I am emanored with the the stories of the atheletes and the adversity they face for that one shot at a medal.
I, like most of the world, paid special attention to Jamacian sprinter Usain Bolt to see if he was going to break his own record in the 200m final. Bolt did not break the record, but I am fascinated by his poise and confidence that he could accomplish such a feat. I marvel at athletes for their determination and their motivation.
This post wil discuss three intrinsic motivators to motivation. Intrinsic motivators are internal notions that drive you to a specific result. I just finished watching a video of author Daniel Pink discuss these same intrinsic elements, and I would love to share my take on them.
Autonomy is the desire to direct our own lives. The mere idea that we can have complete control over the tasks we do on a daily basis. Being about to make decisions based on your own agenda is powerful. Whether it is the time, the place or the task….having the freedom to choice is paramount.
If you work for someone else, you do not have autonomy. You do not have control over your work schedule, your pay, your job description…to name a few things. You are subjected to what management deems is necessary. Personally, I think of that as legalized slavery, but that’s just my opinion. I am an advocate for creating and facilitating autonomy in everyone’s life.
Mastery is the desire to continually improve at something that matters. Mastery command authority. You can take a leadership position by placing yourself in a position that has access to everything.
Humans love the need to “get better at stuff.” We enjoy the satisfaction of personal achievement and progress. Everyone desires to have mastery over something that matters to us.
What does mastery mean for your business specifically? Well think of your why. What is your passion? Your drive from within is the key to your success. That drive burns inside of you, go out and make a difference.
Purpose is the desire to do things in service of something larger than ourselves. People intrinsically want to do things that matter. For an example, entrepreneurs are often motivated to make a difference as opposed to simply aim for profit maximization.
Most people spend 1/3 or more of their time at work, why not make that time matter?
A purpose is are like our requirements. They empower us. They excite us. They help create those mind-bursting moments that jolt us to our senses.
How do you want your life to be? How will you leave a legacy? What is your big why? What is your purpose of what you are doing? We all want to be apart of something bigger.
I really believe the time of traditional financial rewards or a carrot-stick approach to motivation is a thing of the past. Granted many people want financial gain, but I think it’s a safe bet that more people seek more intrinsic forms of motivation.
Personally, I value my time more than I value ANY amount of money. We can never get time back. These are concepts we can latch onto. Have an amazing day!
