The Myth of Time Management

Time management plagues all business owners on a consistent basis. Many of us spend an enormous amount of time, and often money, trying to get more accomplished. Hence, I will provide you with the myth of time management.

Think about this: What if every day you reminded yourself how many weeks you have left in your life? Months? Days?

Thinking of this was my wakeup call to take action in both my life and business. Granted, I am only 30, but time slows down for no one. Yet there is so much that needs to be done on a consistent basis. So I’ll provide you with some strategies to help with time management.

Perhaps you have heard that the busiest people are the best people to start a business, especially a home-based business. These people have family and business responsibilities…yet, they are destined to succeed. How is it possible that people who seem to live a maxed out life, have time to succeed in their respective businesses?

After all, Bill Gates has the same 24 hours a day that you and I have. The key is that successful people do not let time management be their crutch to success.

Also think about this: What if you never wasted a single minute of time. If every minute you were productive. What if you could create more time?

Now I’m sure you are thinking “how can I create more time, that sounds crazy, Quentin.” This may sound crazy, but the most successful people find ways to create more time for their business. They simply get more accomplished in the time they have.

I’ll give you an example: What if you and I both have an hour of time, free from distractions, and we both make 2 prospecting calls completed. Yet, in that same time frame, Linda completes 10 calls. Linda was five times more productive than we were in that hour.

What if you were only doing the things that would produce a result? What income producing activities are you accomplishing daily? Just imagine how that would help your business. What if you made success your duty? What if you had a definitive priority to create some form of success? Whether it’s more leads or signup, whatever the case may be in your business.

A lot of people act as though work is something that they just have to get through. Many people, myself included at times, rely on how fast they can get through the workday. But in reality, they are not spending time being productive.

Most people only work enough so that it feels like they are working. This is a poison to your business, and must be eliminated immediately.

Some people work at a pace so satisfying to get results. The difference is if you are passionate about what you are doing. You must find that happy place. You must find your passion. Once you find your passion, it no longer becomes work. If your passion is in alignment with your mission, then “work” ceases to exist.

You have to decide what is important to you. Make the decision you will not waste any time. No excuses. We all make excuses…whether we blame it on family, or being “busy” etc. Turn your excuses into why you will be successful, not why not. Create your breakthrough in your life. You have to make the choice.

I want to issue a challenge: Throughout the week….keep track of every minute you are spending your time.

Write down these slotted times in a notebook and analyze the notes regularly. This activity is designed to help you become more masterful of your time. People often complain of not having enough time, but when they look at how they have been wasting time, they have a wakeup moment.

This activity helped me out tremendously, and I refer to it periodically. Set a target for each day, and get after it. Track from the time you wake up to the time you lay down to sleep. This creates a clear vision. Another suggestion is to seek an accountability partner to help monitor your success.

We all have the same 86,400 seconds in a day, why not make the most out of it?
