The Power of having a Mentor

A mentor is a teacher of wisdom. Behind the success of many people, you can typically point to someone who was instrumental in their protégé’s accomplishments. Having a mentor is extremely beneficial to your business development. A mentor has traveled the path that you want to go. Mentors are considered wise men and women. Due to the life’s journey, a mentor can help others get to where they need to be in their business. This post will discuss the power of having a mentor.

He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. – Proverbs 13:20

What is a mentor…explained

A mentor is an influential figure, sponsor, or supporter towards someone’s desired accomplishments. They are trusted counsel or teachers. What is important about the mentor-mentee relationship is that we may think we know so much, but the mentor truly “has been down this path before.”

The mentor leads to a way you have never ventured in your entrepreneurial development. Mike Murdock mentions in his book The Law of Recognition the importance of having a mentor. He states that finding the right mentor is essential to your accomplishments. “Finding the right mentor is the difference between poverty & prosperity,” says Murdock.

What are some benefits?

There are several benefits to having a mentor. For the sake of this post, I will focus on three benefits below:

They are the key to the mentee’s success

A key unlocks a door, we can agree to that concept. Well, think of a mentor being the key to a mentee’s success. A mentor allows the mentee to access their knowledge base in order to discover new attainment levels. They may see things in you to “unlock” your true potential. You need a different key sometimes when you face a different door. Don’t we all?

Sometimes we come from other areas and expect that key or “knowledge/experience” to unlock their business. That’s may not be the key you need, but a mentor can place you in the right direction. In various stages of life, we need various mentors to guide us through life’s challenges. The mentor will make sure you have the right key to unlock the right situation you are facing.

Transfer wisdom through relationships

There are two ways gain wisdom:

  • your wisdom
  • through mentors

You can have knowledge, but wisdom teaches you how to apply that knowledge. In relationships people try to be too common. You should respect the mentor relationship. He or she is not a casual friend; address them with a proper title. Make sure you honor the relationship.

We can forget the power that resides in the relationships we maintain. Do not underestimate the depth in someone’s knowledge. Gather information insights from the mentor through conversation. A mentor is not here to be your friend, they are here to learn from and apply that knowledge in your business.

The key to your promotion or wealth

Mentors have been where you want to go. They understand the experiences. Too many people get caught up in trying to “like” the person. It doesn’t matter about you liking the person, it matters if that mentor can guide you to the next milestone…because they have been where your are right now. Everyone wants the money, but not the relationship. I think that logic is backwards. This relationship has tremendous value. When you value the mentor’s past, then you can learn from their experience to create your desired future.

Bonus: They will require your pursuit, he or she does not need what you know (you need what they know)

I love to under-promise and over-deliver, so here is a bonus benefit to the power of having a mentor.

The proof is in your pursuit. The mindset I have prior to meeting my mentor is one of “I need to know what he knows”, or something similar. Most people do not pursue what others know. You should pursue your mentor for their knowledge and get yourself out of the way.

As a mentee, there is a certain level of respect given to the mentor. Your mentor is more concerned with your success rather than your rhetoric. Mentors are concerned about the correction of you. They want you get to the next level. Isn’t that what you want as well?

Your mentor may not necessarily your best friend. A best friend loves you for who you are, but your mentor loves you too much to leave you the way you are currently. Your best friend is comfortable with your past. On the other hand, your mentor is only focused on your future. Best friends ignore your weaknesses. Mentors remove your weaknesses. The role of your best friend is to be your top cheerleader. Whereas the role of your mentor is to be your coach.

I have grown to learn that a mentor loves you too much to leave you the way you are…so when they talk, you should listen then do as they say. Mentors focus on your success, not so much affection.

Realize the VALUE of this relationship

Some people get a mentor relationship confused with that of a parent. A mentor is focused with the reality of your next level of achievement. They do not care about coddling like a parent, a mentor focuses on how to prepare you for the next milestone.

I am firm believer that you have to leave your comfort zone in order to get into your money zone. Mentors are there to push you from comfort to money. They sense your weaknesses before you are able to feel the pain of it.

Mentors are the enemies to negative mindsets. They fight against negative philosophies. The relationship between a mentor and mentee is a gift from above. This gift should be honored, and use this gift to help accelerate your business.
