Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty, and persistence.”
– General Colin Powell
Many people throw around the words “success” and “greatness” all too causally. Everyone’s idea for success and greatness is different. For the course of this post, I will focus on success and greatness as it relates to your business.
Every entrepreneur wants to build a successful business, but many are unaware of the journey they may take to get there. I listened frequently listen to inspirational calls throughout the day, but this one struck a chord with me; and I intend to share with you what I gathered from this call.
The journey from struggling entrepreneur to successful business owner may be tough, but I have gathered nine steps that should help you on your journey. Now of course there are more than nine things that need to happen in order for your business to go from startup, to average, to good, then to great. This short list serves as a brief guide along your entrepreneurial way.
Step 1: Know your strengths & weaknesses
This may seem simple; however entrepreneurs tend to over-complicate things. Everyone has strengths. Some are good writers. There are some wonderful public speakers. Everyone is gifted with something, use that gift. Leverage what you already know, and focus on what you already know. For example, if you are great at writing…then start a blog around your business.
Once you get solid results by leveraging what you already know, then take the time to focus on learning some new skills. Remember, building your business takes a consistent effort; which requires the use of multiple skillsets. Always be in a position to sharpen your skills.
Step 2: Don’t hesitate to get started.
This may be the biggest step by far. I am plagued by this step on a consistent basis. Everything does not have to be perfect. In fact, nothing is perfect. You just need to get started. In order to be great, you need to get started. The beauty about entrepreneurship is that you learn as you go; so start today! Then after you get started, then keep learning and implementing from there.
Every journey begins with a single step, so start today.
Step 3: Start some long-term goals
In order for you to reach your level of success or greatness, you must have goals in place. Long-term goals give you direction. The pursuit of your long-term goals enables you to create your future.
Here are some things to think about in terms of your long-term goals:
- Where do you want to be in a year?
- How many people do you want to impact?
- Remember: your bank account correlates to the amount of people you impact.
Step 4: Break down those long-term goals into short-term goals
This is more or less reverse-engineering. This requires you to consider what you are going to do to accomplish these set goals.
Let’s say that you want to make a set number of sales. Take out time to decide how many sales you want to make. Make that number specific. Then figure out what you can do in order to get to that sales point. How many sales are needed to reach that destination. How many leads need to be generated to reach your sales goal.
Take a look at the breakdown below:
Income → Sales → Leads → Action → Mindset
Essentially… the income you make is a direct reflection of the sales you complete, from the leads you generate, based on the action you sustain, from the mindset you retain. It’s that simple.
Step 5: Be patient
Entrepreneurship tests your patience. There is no such thing as an overnight success. You must become better. How long will certain accomplishments take, it’s clearly up to the individual. Consistency is the key. You must become what you set yourself out to be. If you want phenomenal results, you must become phenomenal.
Talent is overrated
What is not overrated is grit, grind, action, and relentlessness among others. Remember, do not rush. Your results will come with consistent action and work. Be patient!
Step 6: Learn from past experiences & innovate
You learn from the past experiences you have had in life as well as in business. Put yourself in a position to continue to learn and innovate. By constant innovation, you learn what does and does not work in your business. You gain wisdom along the way. Many people do not do this, yet they expect major results. Everyone must go through their own path and innovate.
Step 7: Create content regularly
One of the keys in business to reach more people. When you reach those people, authenticity is key. Consistency helps develop authenticity as well. People need to see who you are and what you are about. That’s what is a deciding factor in business.
It is a very simple concept to understand…people buy products from people and brands they know, like, and trust. So you must become a person and brand people like and trust.
Each day you should be generating content. The content could be a blog post, video, Facebook Live, etc. This content helps build consistency and credibility in the eyes of your prospects. Make sure to document something daily. For example; if you get on a call, document that moment. Share what you are doing as a way for others to feel connected to you. People love to feel connected. Take people on a journey of you becoming successful and great. Start a movement, people love the feeling of getting involved on a like-minded basis.
Everyone loves a story, go out and create your own story!
Step 8: Be consistent
This is something I am constantly working on. You must keep going. Constant creation is necessary. You cannot afford to take a day off. Now when I say a day off, I mean you cannot afford to have days where no activity is going on. Sure you may not have leads everyday, but you must display some form of action daily. Quite frankly, most entrepreneurs know what they need to do in their respective business. They just need to create the massive action to grow their business.
Step 9: Connect with a mentor or community
I have mentioned the power of having a mentor in the past. There’s power in aligning yourself with someone who has been where you currently are, and is willing to help you on your journey. Learning from a mentor helps you get to your results faster. You are cutting the learning curve when you learn from a mentor. Think of it as shaving time; such time that could have been spent struggling, is utilized excelling to the next level.
These are the 9 steps every entrepreneur must take in order to reach the success and greatness they seek in their respective business. If you have more keys, feel free to comment and let me know what you think.
