Your Upline: Help or Resource?
Upline leadership, a source of help or resource?
In today’s post will unpack the types of mindset.
Change occurs everyday. If there is anything you want to change in your life, all you need to do is make a decision. In terms of changing your business results, you may want to consider your mindset.
There are two types of mindset that lead to the success, or failure of your business. The choice lies in which mindset you wish to reside. The two types of mindset are help and resource.
In this video, I briefly explain the difference between the help mindset and the resource mindset:
The word “help” specifically means to make something easier for someone else by offering one’s services. Essentially to look for someone else to provide a service to you. There are times in which anyone could or will need help. However this post will focus on the constant desire to request for help.
There will be times where network marketers will want to rely on their upline, leader, coach or sponsor for something. This is a normal business process.
When you first started your business, you may have developed the tendency to second-guess things frequently. You’re constantly double-checking to make sure you are doing something the correct way. Perhaps you called your sponsor frequently, in an effort to avoid making a mistake. Guess what, mistakes will happen; it’s a part of your learning curve. The key is to learn from your mistakes.
Your Two Best Friends
There are times in which you may reach out to your upline, when you should have researched the answer to your question on your own. It is normal to reach out to others for help. Personally, I consult my two best friends when I need answers to my business questions. Those friends are Google and YouTube. In entrepreneurship, if you do not know something...it is your duty to find out and share with others. Click To Tweet
Everything you need can be found on Google, and there are tons of how to videos on YouTube. You can literally get trained on just about anything using those two sites. When you have learned the answer to your question, then you could create some content and share it with your team.
Value to the Marketplace.
The one thing I have noticed is that people who are in this help mindset, do not take much action. It makes sense because if you are seeking answers from someone else, then what are you learning? If you are so focused on “being perfect” in your business, you limit yourself on possible business gains. This is because you are coming from a place of fear and doubt. If you are not willing to make mistakes, then you will not be able to succeed in business. Click To Tweet
I have failed in some form or fashion plenty of times that my upline was not supporting me in. What does that mean exactly? See, when you continuously second-guess yourself, you are right. In fact, you are 100% right. When I first joined my network marketing company, my expectation was that my upline needed to support me. In fact, these things were what happened during my early “expectations”:
- I failed to take consistent action.
- I also was not the driver of my business.
- There was no forward progress.
- I was not hungry for new trainings in order to take myself and my business to the next level
I didn’t understand what I was doing wrong, until I made this particular mindset shift.
A resource is defined as an action or strategy that may be adopted in adverse circumstances. The best move an entrepreneur can make is to scale back their reliance on upline leadership. I’m not saying not to follow those leaders anymore. You should use your upline leaders as a tool or a resource.
When you make this shift, you will become the driver of your business. You will take matters into your own hands. By investing in training and personal development, you will be stronger everyday. You should use your upline for feedback in order for you to move forward.
Here is an example format for using upline leadership as a resource.
Take consistent action for a sustainable period of time. Talk to 5-10 people daily. As you are getting results, document them. Continue your process for a couple of weeks, and make your sure your results are descriptive so that you can give your upline specific comments as to what progress you have made. Then go to your upline with all the pertinent details. You are now able to ask your upline for any recommendations or feed back to move forward.
You are not coming from a place of help. The upline can clearly understand that you have taken action, and would like feedback on how you can scale your business to the next level. Doesn’t the below scenario sound better than asking for help all the time?
“I’ve taken action, here are the results I have received. This is how I have been prospecting. Do you have any recommendations or feedback so I can move forward?”
There is a big difference between:
“I need the help in order to get results in my business” and “I’m willing to take action, show results, then come to you with feedback.”
The ultimate expectation is that you are the driver of your business. When you align yourself with your upline leaders that are resources to continue to push you forward. You are the cause of your success, not anyone else. Make sure to move forward from a space of help, become an investor (into your personal development), and be the action-taker. Reflect on this message today.
As yourself, what can you do to put your business in your own hands?
