What Is Network Marketing & How Does It Work?
Whether you know it or not, you are already performing network marketing in some capacity. Have you ever purchased a piece of clothing from a department store, and someone compliments you on it and asks you where you bought it?
You tell them the store, and they go to that specific store and buy the piece of clothing? Congratulations, you have become a participant in network marketing. You just did not get paid for referring the person who made the sale. That’s the key difference.
Network marketing (also known as Multi-level marketing or MLM) is an industry in which you get paid for referring your network of people over to a product or service. However the difference is when you join an MLM business, you get paid when your referral makes a purchase.
How Can You Get Paid?
There are two different ways you can get paid with network marketing. The first is with customers; this is where they purchase your product or service. These individuals are not interested in building a business. Customers simply like the products’ benefits. You can earn a commission every time customers make a purchase.
You can build an empire just off customers.
The next way you can get paid is from people who decide they want to build a business and earn money themselves. These people are called business builders.
A big mistake a lot of marketers make when building their business, they try and force business building on everyone. Trying to force people to be a business builder is the wrong approach. Not everyone wants to build a team of builders. They are happy just using the product, and that is all they want to do. If that is the case, don’t try and force them into anything more.

The Downside to MLM
One of the biggest downsides to network marketing is the low cost to get started. It’s usually only a couple of hundred dollars to have your own business.
Many people think that since the cost to get started is so low, they do not have to put forth as much effort if any at all. Add in the rejection that comes along with building an MLM, and people quit way too fast, which is why the failure rate in network marketing is so high.
If you were to go out there and invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into a business, you’d work extremely hard to make sure the business succeeds. You have to apply that same thought process and work ethic when building your network marketing business.
What Are the Benefits of Network Marketing?
Here are some of the biggest benefits of doing network marketing:
- Low Start-Up Costs – Only a few hundred dollars to get started and you own your business.
- Low Business Overhead – There’s no need to worry about building rent, insurance or anything like that, you usually will need to be on some type of autoship. Autoship is often your only overhead expense.
- Work Anywhere – You can work your business from anywhere in the world.
- Flexible Hours – Set your own hours
- Get Started Quickly – Once you sign-up as a distributor, you are in business. There’s no waiting around. You can start making money the same day.
Network marketing is a great business model for anyone looking to earn money from home. With the low cost to get started, unlimited income potential, if you learn the skills needed and put in the work you can build an empire.
Is This a Pyramid Scheme?
I tend to get this question quite a bit, but network marketing is a business model that has been around years. Ever heard of Amway or Avon? Now those are some MLM companies out there who do operate illegally, just like there are corporations that operate illegally as well. That is why you must do your due diligence before you join a company.
It’s unfortunate that the behavior of some lead to the stigma that MLM companies are scams. Yet this is not true, there are plenty of upstanding companies out there. You just need to make an informed decision before you join the MLM company, and I can help you with that. A key red flag is if a company pushes recruiting new members and earning money without offering a clear product or service.
Should You Build On or Offline?
I recommend you should use both methods. In fact, I teach online and offline techniques to growing your MLM business. But with the way technology has taken off, using the internet helps you create more leverage than building offline.
When I came online a few years ago, I had no clue of how this online marketing thing worked. If someone were to have asked me what a capture page was, I would’ve returned them a blank stare.
It wasn’t;t until I plugged into a marketing system that taught me how the pieces fit together AND it kept me up-to-date with the ever-changing marketing strategies out there.
